New Infrastructure Aims to Enable More Efficient and Accessible AI

The Bavarian AI Foundation Model Initiative is a flagship project funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK) to strengthen Bavaria's technological sovereignty in the field of AI.

The initiative focuses on developing more efficient AI models that require fewer resources, making them accessible to startups, academia, and industry.

The Free State of Bavaria is investing over €50 million in high-performance GPUs from Nvidia. The systems will be installed at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and will be available to researchers from 2027.

The Scientific coordination of the initiative is led by MCML PI Björn Ommer and Wolfram Burgard (University of Technology Nuremberg).
