Highlights From the MCML Munich AI Day 2026

Around 400 guests joined us for the MCML Munich AI Day 2026, bringing together researchers, industry representatives, and members of the wider AI community for a full day of talks, discussions, networking, and scientific exchange.

Pre AI Day
The event began the day before with a Pre AI Day Workshop organized together with NVIDIA. Researchers explored the full AI stack, from the lifecycle and alignment of large language models to inference optimization, model compression, Physical AI, and World Foundation Models.

 

Career Fair
The Munich AI Day itself officially opened with the MCML Career Fair at the Muffathalle. Following short pitch talks, MCML Junior Members had the opportunity to connect with representatives from SAP, NVIDIA, Allianz, and DeepL, discuss career opportunities and potential collaborations, and learn more about current AI applications in industry.

Keynotes
The scientific program started with keynotes by Serge Belongie and Klaus-Robert Müller. Serge Belongie discussed recent advances in fine-grained image analysis and the ability of modern vision-language models to distinguish subtle visual differences.

Klaus-Robert Müller focused on the role of AI in the sciences and explored how machine learning can help researchers not only make predictions, but also better understand complex systems in physics and chemistry.

Later in the day, Xiaoxiang Zhu showed how AI can transform massive volumes of Earth observation data into actionable insights on urbanization, climate change, and sustainability.

Björn Eskofier then turned to the future of healthcare, discussing how interoperable health data infrastructures and personal health dataspaces could contribute to more objective, precise, and personalized medicine.

Panel discussion
The day concluded with a panel discussion on one of the defining questions surrounding AI today: How can we regulate AI wisely? Zeynep Akata, Armin Nassehi, Philipp Knobelspies, and Dagmar Schuller discussed what responsible AI governance requires in practice, how innovation can be fostered while addressing societal concerns, and what roles researchers, companies, policymakers, and citizens should play.

Poster Sessions
The program also featured poster sessions presenting the latest work of MCML Junior Members as part of the ELLIS/ELIZA Pre-ICML Fest 2026. The sessions provided early-career researchers with an opportunity to present their work, exchange ideas, and connect with the broader research community.
