Björn Ommer on WDR 5 About AI Safety and Europe’s Independence

Why AI Systems Need External Review and Europe Needs Its Own Models

In an interview on the WDR 5 radio program “Morgenecho” on September 15, 2026, MCML PI Björn Ommer discussed the current state of AI development and its risks. According to Ommer, the training of AI systems is advancing too quickly for human safeguards to keep up, which is why he considers external reviews of these systems to be a sensible step.

Ommer also emphasized that Europe needs its own AI models to avoid political dependence on others. The interview is available as a podcast in ARD Sounds.
