In 1950, British mathematician Alan Turing proposed a now-famous test to determine if a machine can think: a machine should be considered thinking if it can converse with humans in such a way that its responses are indistinguishable from those of a real person. For decades, this seemed like science fiction, but in the past two years, we've been surrounded by such systems: ChatGPT and other AI systems can answer any question, provide information, offer comfort, write letters, manuals, homework, poems, and novels.

So, has the test been passed and the question answered? Are we now in the age of thinking machines? But what do we mean by "thinking," and what can AI truly do—and what can't it do? (Talk in German).
